Our 2005 Adoption Trip

(Adventure To Find The Newest Calder)

Toward the end of 2004, we looked closely at our family and our lives, and decided that we do indeed want (need) another child to complete our family. My brothers and sisters are my best friends, and family is so very important to both of us. We discussed our options, and found that we were both very curious about adoption, and had long considered it an ideal for our lives. So we started researching. We decided on Kazakhstan based on many factors, including the age of available children, the rules and laws governing the process, and the reported quality of care received by the children while in the orphanages.

On March 1, 2005, we officially began the process. In the 6 months since then, we have produced mountains of paperwork, been fingerprinted and background-checked by 3 levels of government, and been approved by our friends (through letters of recommendation), our doctor, a social worker, Local and State governments, USCIS, the Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Education in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Finally, we have received our travel visas, and we are embarking on this most amazing adventure to meet our new daughter.

We will be traveling to Almaty, Kazakhstan, where we will stay for 4-7 weeks. We will travel to a smaller town each day, to meet and visit with our new daughter. After 2 weeks of daily visits, we will be eligible to adopt her. After a favorable decision by the judge, and she will be our daughter. After that, it will take a couple of weeks to process her paperwork to leave Kazakhstan, and travel with us back to the US. At this time she will be granted immediate US citizenship, and all the same legal rights as a child born to us.

Thank you for visiting our site, and we encourage you to visit often, and watch our trip unfold. Emails are always appreciated, although we may not have time to respond to all, we will definitely thrive on reading them!

All our love,

Brian, Vanessa, Liam Mays Calder
